On the other, social scientists have concentrated on identifying common patterns, without looking in too much detail at the specifics of any given conflict.

Focusing on the numerous civil conflicts that have occurred throughout the world since the Second World War, Bill Kissane bridges this gap, asking what the recent social science literature adds to what we already know about civil war, but also how insights from the historical literature, from the ancient Greeks onwards, can help explain the violent experience of so many parts of the world since 1945.

At its heart is the question of what makes the contemporary challenge posed by civil war so different from that of past periods -- and what, if anything, is new about the contemporary experience of civil war at the dawn of the twenty-first century.

About the Author

Bill Kissane, political scientist and historian, is a Reader in Politics at the London School of Economics, where he is a member of the Conflict Research Group. He is the author of several books on civil-war related subjects, including a pioneering study of the Irish civil war, The Politics of the Irish Civil War (2005), also published by Oxford University Press, and has held visiting positions at University College Dublin, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Bielefeld, and the National Humanities Centre in North Carolina.

About the Author
Paul Moon lectures in New Zealand history at the Auckland University of Technology and has a growing reputation as an original and well-informed historian. He is the author of a number of books on New Zealand history, specialising in Treaty issues and the early years of European settlement - his most recent work is The Newest Country in the World: A History of New Zealand in the Decade of the Treaty.

I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds

I'm Maori - staunchly so. I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds. The practice is abhorrent (my ancestors engaged in it with gusto so its part of my heritage and I'm more than equipped to make this statement). Interestingly by the turn of the 19th century Maori writers of the day were openly scornful of 'kaitangata' practices that their own grandfathers and fathers had been part of.

I have no patience for critics who accuse the author of cultural relativism, cultural appropriation, cultural misunderstanding, and even racism. These are not critiques of the book but rather a sign of the accusers discomfort with the truth they are confronted with. My ancestors ate people - that's what they did. And the practice was widespread and a well integrated part of the culture. You can't gloss over it or try and put a spin that somehow makes the practice 'ok'. They didn't engage in the practice for spiritual reasons or whatever. I'm sure no victim of kaitangata went into the hangi saying 'at least I'm being eaten for cultural and spiritual reasons'.

I did struggle a little with section 5 onwards. The argument seemed over reached re 'revisionist apostasy'. But other than that a good and thought provoking read.

BTW we Maori are big enough and tough enough to take a bit of academic critique of our (old) practices.

A balanced and well argued account on Maori cannibalism. The testimony of the numerous witnesses, along with the Maori oral histories, and the archaeological proof, should surely challenge any naive celebration of indigenous culture.

Thought Provoking

This is a thought provoking read and probably not for someone wanting only entertainment. However, it provides a probably more authentic look at early Maori life than many of the new age revisionist views, which can tend to portray some sort of lost idyllic utopia. It is food for thought as to how much the hardships and horrors of the past may subconsciously still be affecting Maori to this day and manifesting in some of the social problems that are evident in contemporary New Zealand.

Comencé a leer Alma Mía y no pude despegar mis ojos de la historia hasta leer la palabra Fin. Una novela sobre Weremindfull, distinta a todo lo que haya leído. Todos soñamos con nuestra alma gemela, en el caso de Dereck fue más complicado que eso. Reconocer que la mujer que estaba destinada a ser su compañera de vida, era la única prohibida para él, lo sacudió hasta sus más recónditos cimientos. Una historia en donde la más arraigada lealtad y la lucha con sus instintos más primitivos, son puestos a prueba a cada paso. Para Deanna North tampoco es fácil, ese hombre la asusta y la atrae a partes iguales. Su vida ha sido protegida, quizás demasiado, siempre. Descubrir la verdad sobre su esposo, el peligro en el que se ve envuelta cada día que pasa, hace que finalmente tome las riendas de su vida. Y esa vida incluye, saberse enamorada de un hombre “diferente”.
Me enamoré de ambos en el minuto cero. Con la mezcla perfecta de acción, amor, y sensualidad, donde el deber, la obligación moral y la pasión se entrelazan de manera impecable.

Please see photos before buying this book

I have received my new copy with the improved paper, and have uploaded a photo of the same page as my previous book with the lesser quality paper. You can see that there is a significant improvement in the opacity of the paper and a reduction in the amount of bleed through from the following pages.

Is it as good as my 24th edition? It's close, but no.

Is it good enough for daily use? Probably.

The text has gone from unreadable in the first printing to tolerable in the second. I've spent quite a bit of time today looking at various pages, and while distracting, the text from following pages doesn't completely overwhelm what you are trying to read. We shall see over time, but for the moment the larger text wins out over the tiny text in my 24th edition. The large print book will be kept with me at work and my old book will go in my toolbox at home.

Use your own judgement before buying this book. Take a look at the photos I have uploaded and see for yourself if the bleed through is more distracting than you can accept.

I've changed the number of stars in the review from one to three. The book should still be more readable considering its use.

Twenty years ago, I bought the 24th edition after graduating from college. It has served me well over the years but I wanted to give myself a treat this year and buy the updated version. I went with the large print since it was going to be my last one, and I wanted to make it easier on my eyes to read it later in life.

I had read that the pages were thinner in the last few editions making it more difficult to read, but I decided to buy it anyway. How bad could it be? Well, I found out how bad. With luck, Amazon will publish my photo on the product page and you can see for yourself how thin the pages are. You can see the back of the page clearly, the front and back of the next page, and sometimes even the next page! This book is vastly more difficult to read than the 24th edition I have, and despite having some additional information I would like to have at my fingertips and the larger type, I just can't keep this book.

What good is a reference book if you can't read it? What good is having super thin and super delicate pages on a book that you will use the most?

Please, do yourself a favor and find a good used book. The information hasn't changed much, and your eyes will thank you.

Every engineers bible!

I swear by this book. Granted I haven't had many editions in my possession but everything I have to look up on the Internet for my job as a mechanical/process engineer is 98% in this book. It takes almost all textbooks I've had for my degree specific classes and compacts the information into 2800 chock filled pages. It will soon be filled with stickies and post its for critical info areas. Equations, stress, strain, deflection, material selection, grades, fasteners, gearing, cross section analysis, conversion tables, machining processes, it's all here. It has earned a permanent spot on my desk at work. I use it every chance I get.
Shell out the extra bucks for this thicker page version as I've heard bad things about how bad the page bleed is from the original edition. Every mechanical, design, industrial or process engineer or machinist should have this book on hand!!

Same quality as older editions

A lot of reviews I saw before I bought this stated the pages are so thin that they are unreadable. I won't argue that may have been the case for the initial release. I didn't get a copy printed during the initial release. I think the pages look great. I saw a lot of people saying older editions were better quality, especially as far as the paper was concerned. To test that, I compared the copy I got (29th Edi.) with my father-in-law's copy (24th Edi.). I found a page in each that had the same information printed on it. I compared and asked my wife to compare. Neither of us could see a discernible difference between the two.

Essential content, muscular English, INEXPENSIVE

I've had these two books for just a few weeks and have read everything at least twice, many chapters many more times than that. Each time I go through I find something new. They only seem expensive. For the person who wants to move beyond merely producing a well made variation of a factory guitar, the information in these books can put you 10 or 15 years ahead of where you are now in your quest. What's that worth on a per year basis? They seem under priced when I think of them this way.

They are also useful for players and collectors who wish to expand their understanding of how the instrument works. To pick one example from many instances, Mr. Somogyi will tell you how a blues guitar benefits from a certain bracing pattern while a finger picked guitar works better using a different design.

The author is a master builder who has earned his place in the history of lutherie, yet he openly discusses methods that are alternatives to the ones he uses, right alongside his own approach. When one knows as much as Mr. Somogyi, there is no need to be dogmatic. Likewise, when one writes as well as Mr. Somogyi, there is no obfuscation of complex discussions, yet neither does he talk down to the reader. He treats his readers with respect and offers direct, plain-English access to what he has learned from his many years of rather profound work. At times, he demonstrates great love for the reader as well.

The books are beautifully made too. The paper is substantial, the photographs excellent, the layout elegant, all of which make them both easy and pleasurable to read. Contrary to one opinion expressed here, Somogyi did not need better advice about how to write a book. He set out to make the best books he could make and succeeded to the extent anyone who wants to do their best succeeds.

November 27, 2012: I've had the books for many months now. I added the word "INEXPENSIVE" to my review title for a very plain reason: These books contain more useful information than all the other lutherie books in my collection combined. The total cost of the other books was more than these two. Hence, using my "bang for the buck" scale, Somogyi's books cost the least.

I also recommend his DVD for anyone seeking to understand his "secret". The secret is there, almost naked, when he taps out a top that he tells the audience is destined to become the top of a finished Somogyi guitar. It is so openly presented some my miss its importance. "Tone" is the result of several entities: species of soundboard, thickness, grains per inch, brace design, choice and configuration of bracewood, surface area of top, location and size of soundhole, and so on. When combined, each specific mix contributes to the specific tone and responsiveness of a specific top. There is no single element that can be isolated from the others and declared "the secret", which frustrates many who follow Somogyi. A member of the audience wants to see the braces. Somogyi refuses. I'd bet dollars to donuts what is behind the "mystery top" is some variation of the many Somogyi tops photographed in the books. That is, it looked more or less like most other X-Braced tops made by advanced luthiers today. The braces are but one ingredient of many. Somogyi had already revealed his "secret" when he tapped out the top into a very high quality microphone recording the session. It is a good idea to play back that short segment over and over until you have a solid sense of the sound he generously offers to anyone who wishes to listen. Unlike factory guitars, guitars at his level are not the result of following specifications as closely as possible. While specs are a part of the process - and he offers many concrete, measured suggestions, such as top thickness, brace configurations, etc. - they are the starting point, not the final destination. That is reached in the adjusting process known as "voicing". Until you hear and internalize the sound of a great raw top, you are not voicing but rather removing wood and hoping.

That is, when a luthier builds a top he or she must be able to achieve and recognize a certain sound before the box is closed, finished, neck and strings attached, then finally played. There is little you can alter at that stage. However, when the top is still "raw" you can make changes to its "voice". The Somogyi DVD reveals in a very specific way what that "voice" sounds like when voicing is completed. Buy the books if you want to see what his braces look like, if you want to know his ball park specs, the woods he uses, the jigs, the molds, how to French Polish, determine neck set angle, join neck and body, bridge height, saddle construction, etc. Buy the books if you want to understand how the various parts can be altered and the likely outcomes of specific alterations and their combinations. Buy the DVD if you want to hear what the whole package - in the raw - ultimately sounds like. Buy them all if guitar making is important to you.

I also want to address whether these are beginner's books. The sheer volume of the discussion may lead some to think they are not "practical" for beginners. Certainly, they are a large meal that no one can digest in a few settings, whether beginner or expert. But if you are a serious beginner, they are extremely important, because they are utterly basic. They cover the foundation of what is of necessity a long journey. I have made some "good" guitars. If these books and DVD had been available when I started, they would have been much better, including the very first one. My other books would have been more useful to me if I had known the foundation he offers. If it is your first guitar you will still need something very specific, like the David Russell Young book, which is clearly written and not much money if you look for a used copy on Amazon. But if you don't alter Young's instructions with what you can learn and hear from the Somogyi material, you will get a good guitar that is overbuilt and restrained, though long on playability, and will sound as good or better than most factory guitars. But it won't be as good as it could be if you had digested just a little of what Somogyi offers.

Assuming your shop has most of the tools needed, there is still considerable money to be invested in quality materials for just one guitar, not to mention the immense about of time it takes to do the first one well from a technical point of view. We routinely pay $75 per hour to get our cars fixed. Somogyi's materials cost pennies per hour of use, and will pay off with an astonishing guitar, even if it is your first effort. You would do well to follow Young's advice to keep it simple looking because decoration contributes nothing to sound and decoration sloppily done hurts, rather than helps, the look, while consuming hours of time. But I would not worry about avoiding rosewood (as Young suggests). Instead, use quartersawn Indian rosewood, which is expensive, but not much more expensive than good quality mahogany. It is very stable and easy to work and you will get a more "live" instrument. Both authors suggest a laminated neck you carve yourself, but a CNC pre carved neck would do fine, especially if you avoid the difficult to fit dovetail joint. If you read nothing else in Somoygi, read his discussion of tops in both books and listen to his finished top in the DVD. Follow his suggestions and with a modicum of care, your first guitar should sound better than any factory guitar you can buy and many hand made instruments.

Whether you are a beginner or expert, never forget that the best instruments are achieved by paying attention to the basics. That is where great sound is born. That is what Somogyi's books and DVD cover.

A masterwork

I purchased this book personally from the author over a year ago and was, and continue to be, absolutely delighted with it. This is a must-have book for the serious acoustic steel-string guitar maker. It is NOT an introductory how-to book. It is rather the masterwork of one of the greatest luthiers of our time, summarizing a life-time of experience. We live in the golden age of guitar-making; there are more luthiers today than ever. The field (at least for steel string guitars) is vibrant and creative, with many different schools of thought, building, and design. This book is the personal perspective of one of the most successful, respected, and yes sometimes controversial, guitar makers alive today.

Besides a wealth of information on theory, design, and construction, there is, underlying, a consistent philosophical thread throughout. This distinguishes it from any merely mechananistic "how to" book on guitar making, or virtually any other craft. The author's genius is that he communicates this philosophy, not directly or ponderously at all; its just sort of there, embedded in his lively and highly readable writing.

The nitty-gritty of guitar making

These books are full of information for the more serious guitar builder. It would suit serious beginners and those who are more experienced also. I have started reading the second book first (Making the responsive Guitar), as I am building my first guitar at the moment. I was blown away by the amount of equipment that Ervin has in his shop...more than I think most people would have. He has a wall of about 15 laminate trimmers, I guess each with a different bit! However, great to see how this master goes about his work. Definitely worth the money. Especially when I have seen these books for sale in Australia for $650, which is ridiculous and shameful. I highly recommend, but like all guitar building books, you'll have your own way of doing things, or don't have the same machinery etc. Great exposure to Ervin's methods.

Popular belief holds up this infamous institution as a symbol of religious and political intolerance--against the Protestants, Jews, Catholic heretics, and political orders such as the Knights Templar. Yet when Henry Kamen first wrote The Spanish Inquisition in 1965, he argued that the Inquisition was not as powerful or cruel as commonly conceived.

This updated version of Kamen's hypothesis continues and reaffirms his original arguments. In this edition, Kamen provides additional evidence derived mostly from monographic studies conducted by other scholars that separates myth from reality; Kamen suggests that the Inquisition did not enjoy widespread popularity, in Spain or the rest of Europe, and that it was used as a device to scare off enemies. He also concludes that the failure of the Spanish populace to accept Lutheran principles had more to do with popular indifference toward Protestantism than interference from the Inquisition. Though Kamen's book is occasionally lacking in social analysis, this revisionist overview of the Inquisition's impact on Europe is rich in detail and will appeal to anyone who has an interest in this period.

These included the conversos (recent Jewish converts to Catholicism, who composed the majority of the Inquisition's victims), followers of the humanist Erasmus, Lutherans and other Protestants (including foreigners), Moriscos (recent Muslim converts), and Catholics whom the tribunal deemed ``heretical,'' often on flimsy evidence. Kamen is informative on the structure and problems of the Inquisition, noting for example the struggles between the papacy and the Spanish crown over its control (the latter gained the upper hand), corruption by some of its officials, and regional differences in enforcing its decrees. His main ``revision'' is to historicize the Inquisition, in the sense of contextualizing its brutal intolerance; he notes for example that ``the Netherlands [in the mid-16th century] already possessed an Inquisition of its own'' and that the courts in Antwerp (then part of Holland) ``between 1557 and 1562 executed 103 heretics, more than died in the whole of Spain in that period.'' Kamen also points out how Protestant and other writers mythified the Inquisition, exaggerating its cruelties in the service of anti-Catholic propaganda. Historians also err, Kamen argues, in assigning to the Inquisition primary blame for Spain's decline as a European power; he marshals impressive evidence against this thesis. However, Kamen occasionally over-relativizes the Inquisition, going so far as to say that it created no new problems for Spain. Yet the strengths of Kamen's work, which undoubtedly will prove controversial, far exceed its shortcomings. A BALANCED STUDY OF THIS PART OF SPAIN'S HISTORY

The Spanish Inquisition by Henry Kamen is a balanced overview of this sad part of Spanish History. At 300 plus pages the author shows the motivation behind the Spanish Inquisition and that this inquisition was just that, "Spanish." By sourcing Inquisition, Spanish, and other documentation author Kamen traces the roots and history of the Spanish Inquisition. He shows how this was a tool of the unified Spanish Crown that resulted in its own fear of it past and inability, at times, to deal with contemporary Spain, which came to be at the end of the Muslim domination of Spain and rise of the Protestant Reformation in the rest of Europe. The author does not gloss over the suffering it caused to both Jewish and Muslim converts to Christianity, but shows that overall people were better treated by "The Holy Office" aka the Spanish Inquisition than the secular courts. Remember, heresy was a secular crime, punishable only by the secular authorities. And while those Jews and Muslims who did not convert might be considered heathens they could not be heretics. So, those who suffered at its hands were Catholics. The author also shows that, for its time, the Spanish Inquisition acted rationally. For example, when the great witchcraft scare was dominating Europe and its colonies (lets not forget the Salem Witch Trials) for its part the Spanish Inquisition so this phenomena as mental illness or an overactive imagination. In other words Witch hunting stopped dead in its tracks when it got to Spain. Henry Kamen does not gloss over the torture or burnings of the inquisition's victims, but does show that for all of Europe, Catholic and Protestant, this was not uncommon for most crimes. And, many of the victims of the Spanish Inquisition were burnt and punished in effigy. Kamen shows how the Spanish Crown used the Inquisition to deal with its fear of an Andulus (former Muslim rulers of Spain) Fifth column and the rise of Protestantism in Western Europe. Remember Spain controlled a good part of the present day Netherlands and Belgium as well as Parts of Germany. So some Lutheran ideas did make their way to Spain. But, Kamen also shows that much of Spain, mainly the rural areas, was never even touched by the Inquisition. And that the Inquisition never had whole hearted support from the crown, those in positions of power, and the common folk. It was not the Gestapo like machine painted by many of its critics. But, criticized it should be and author Kamen shows the sad effects of the Inquisition not only on its victims, but on Spain itself. The author concludes by showing that people's view of the Spanish Inquisition is not based on the historical data available but on the imaginations of those who have not reviewed or studied this data. Overall a great work of history is this book.

Spanish Inquisition sans polemic

It is a difficult task to convey historical information on a topic that carries with it the baggage of a 500 year old feud we call "the reformation." Much of what has been written in the past is either Catholic apologetic or Protestant polemic and with time the facts have taken a distortion all their own. Professor Kamen does a good job of trying to raise the discussion to a higher more balanced approach. He does not attempt to convey new information but instead takes a step back from the rhetoric to try and give the reader an ability to see the facts without the emotional baggage we carry. It is a difficult task - perhaps impossible to accomplish entirely - but Prof. Kamen is as close as anyone to accomplishing that task.

This is one work on the Spanish (as opposed to general) inquisition that lovers of history have needed for some time. Sober yet passionately involved. It is the Spanish Inquisition sans polemic and a worthy addition to any history collection of the period.

the best introduction to Donaldson's gauge theory, even if it is outdated

Gauge theory as a field for study by mathematicians, and in particular, topologists, was initiated by Donaldson's proof, which is the content of this book, that the only simply connected smooth closed 4-manifolds with definite intersection form are connected sums of complex projective planes (with the factors having either orientation). This was the first major advance in 4-manifold smooth topology beyond Rohlin's theorem on the signature of a smooth spin 4-manifold and the Kirby-Siebenmann obstruction. Donaldson's theorem was followed by many other related results, in particular, the discovery of the Donaldson polynomial invariants and various gluing and vanishing theorems, none of which appear in this early book, so this work is not suitable as a comprehensive reference for the theory. But it is still essential for a student wishing to learn gauge theory because of the extensive coverage of the requisite analysis, topology, and geometry that one needs to work in this field (or even read any later works). The authors endeavor to explain intuitively the motivation behind the different steps in this long proof (it takes more than 100 pages to prove the theorem), with some effective figures included as well.

Donaldson's proof is based on studying the moduli space of certain (anti-self-dual) solutions (mod gauge equivalences) of the Yang-Mills equations, the most fundamental equation in particle physics, which includes the vacuum Maxwell equations of electromagnetics, as well as those of QED and QCD, as special cases. For the SU(2) case over a smooth simply connected compact 4-manifold, the moduli space can be shown to be nonempty, orientable, smooth except for a finite number of points, near which the moduli space is a cone on a projective space, and having one noncompact end that is diffeomorphic to a collar on the original 4-manifold. This establishes a cobordism between the original manifold and a disjoint union of copies of CP^2, which proves the theorem. The various chapters of the book prove each of the aforementioned properties of the moduli spaces, mainly through tedious technical analytic results. Along the way the necessary material concerning bundles, connections, Sobolev spaces, Fredholm operators, index theory, classifying spaces, Bochner-Weitzenboeck formulas, etc., is presented, making this the most accessible gauge-theoretic work for (2nd-year) graduate students.

The second author, Karen Uhlenbeck, was one of the pioneers in the field, deriving several critical analytic results about sequences of solutions to the YM equations that are ubiquitous in gauge theory proofs; the book includes her proof of the famed removable singularities theorem as an appendix. There's also an early section on the construction of fake R^4s, one of the strangest results of 4-manifold topology (although I think Lawson's Theory of Gauge Fields in Four Dimensions does a better job of explaining this, and orientability as well). It is preferable to read the second edition, which includes a brief introduction that sumarizes advances in the field between 1984 and 1991, in addition to having been re-typeset.

A demerit of the book is that it is filled with mathematical typos and many of the technical proofs require some modification in the choice of constants owing to some errors in the inequalities. However, the theorems themselves remain true, as the reader can verify with some effort.

This book will provide the reader the tools to proceed to Donaldson and Kronheimer's The Geometry of Four-Manifolds and Morgan's Gauge Theory and the Topology of Four-Manifolds and The Seiberg-Witten Equations and Applications to the Topology of Smooth Four-Manifolds.
