Evidence (reviewed in this volume) suggests that the situation is similar in other countries and that driver distraction and inattention are even more dangerous as contributing factors in crashes than drug and alcohol intoxication. Having a solid evidence-base from which to develop injury countermeasures is a cornerstone of road-safety management. This book adds to the accumulating evidence-base on driver distraction and inattention. With 24 chapters by 52 authors from more than 10 countries, it provides important new perspectives on the definition and meaning of driver distraction and inattention, the mechanisms that characterize them, the measurement of their effects, strategies for mitigating their effects, and recommendations for further research. The goal of this book is to inspire further research and countermeasure development to prevent and mitigate the potentially adverse effects of driver distraction and driver inattention, and, in doing so, to save lives.

About the Author
Michael A. Regan is at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor with Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden. Between September 1997 and April 2007 he managed the Human Factors and Simulation Group at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), in Melbourne, Australia. Michael is the senior editor and a co-author of the first book on driver distraction - "Driver distraction: Theory, Effects and Mitigation", published by CRC Press in 2008 - and initiated and co-chaired the First International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in September 2009. Michael's research interests focus on driver distraction, human interaction with intelligent transport systems (ITS), driving simulation, driver training and human error. He sits on the Editorial Boards of 4 peer-reviewed journals, including Human Factors, and is the author of around 200 publications. He also sits on two Australian, and one international, Standards Committees. In November 2009 Michael received the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia's Cumming Memorial Medal for highly esteemed human factors and ergonomics research and application in the field of transportation safety. John D. Lee is the Emerson Electric professor in the department of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds an appointment in the department of civil and environmental engineering. His research focuses on the safety and acceptance of complex human-machine systems by considering how technology mediates attention. Specific research interests include trust in technology, advanced driver assistance systems, and driver distraction. He is a coauthor of the textbook "An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering" and is the author or coauthor of over 120 articles. John is a co-editor and a co-author of the first book on driver distraction - "Driver distraction: Theory, Effects and Mitigation", published by CRC Press in 2008. He received the Ely Award for best paper in the journal Human Factors (2002), the best paper award for the journal Ergonomics (2005), and a Donald E. Bently Faculty Fellowship. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences committee on human factors and has served on several other committees for the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Lee serves on the editorial boards of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making; Cognition, Technology and Work; International Journal of Human Factors Modeling and Simulation; and is the associate editor for the journal Human Factors. Trent W. Victor, PhD, is currently working as Senior Specialist in Safety Analysis and Human Factors at Volvo Technology, a research and innovation company in the Volvo Group. In addition he is Competence Area Leader for Behavior in Accident Causation at SAFER vehicle- and traffic safety centre at Chalmers technical university. Trent has formal training in psychology (specialized in attention, vision, perception, eye-movements), computer science, human factors, and human-machine interaction. Trent has held various positions at Volvo Technology since 1996 including Product Area Manager for Driver & Work Environment, and Group Manager for Cognitive Ergonomics. Trent has over 15 years work experience in design and evaluation in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems, from research to product introduction phases, especially on In-Vehicle Information Systems and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, and most specifically on Driver Awareness Products. Trent holds over 13 patents or patent applications within the product areas of real-time distraction countermeasures, drowsiness alert, interaction support (workload management), attention-sensitive driving support, impairment detection, and distraction evaluation tools. He has been responsible for the spin-off of a computer vision eye tracking company where he sits on the board of directors. Trent co-chaired the First International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in September 2009. He is the author of more than 30 publications including journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, technical reports.

This thing is great for nursing school. I was first introduced to this from an instructor that always keeps a copy in her scrub pocket. Every nurse should have a copy of this book for clinical settings.

I will also note that I received the most recent edition of this book when I ordered it so no problem there.

Needed for Every Nurse!

This is one of the best nursing pocket books. The only disadvantage - it lacks explanations of common procedures. It is organized in alphabetical order by the disease name, plus maternity nursing at the end. The info given is enough to refresh your memory about the disease and treatment options. Especially good for med.surge nurse.

A slightly dizzying new spin on the well-loved cumulative rhyming song "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," this madcap picture book stars a ravenously hungry relative who comes to Thanksgiving dinner with a pie. Since she eats the pie in its entirety before she even gets in the house, she has to swallow some cider (that "rumbled and mumbled and grumbled inside her"). If you must know, "She swallowed the cider to moisten the pie, / The Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry, /Perhaps she'll die." The story continues in this vein, as we watch the hosts grow visibly alarmed--and the children visibly delighted-- by the old lady's surreal appetite and supernaturally increasing girth. PreSchool-K. In a holiday version of a familiar children's song, an old lady swallows a dry Thanksgiving pie and a succession of other foods, beginning with an entire jug of cider to moisten the pie. Although the cider rumbles and grumbles agreeably inside her, the other foods are not related. The woman swallows a salad to go with a squash, a pot to go with a turkey, and a 10-layer cake to go with the pot. While no one can accuse the original "I Know an Old Lady" of making sense, the animals devoured increase in size each time and fit into a more-or-less logical food chain. Jackson's version is redeemed, however, by the fun of rhymes such as "Her future looked murky, after that turkey" and an ending that shows the old lady as a giant balloon in a Thanksgiving Parade as she finally says, "I'm full." Schachner's watercolor illustrations are absolutely delightful. this book is so much fun! it is very clever

this book is so much fun! it is very clever...great book to give to a child around thanksgiving time as it talks about all the things that might wind up on your thanksgiving day table...and concludes with the big parade! the illustrations are chaotically fun and colorful and the rhyming is entertaining as the story unfolds. the only reason i'm not giving it five stars is...every page ends with..."Perhaps she'll die!"...which is of course is the way the poem goes. But, i would much preferred the author to say, for example, "She swallowed the cider to moisten the pie, the Thanksgiving pie that was really too dry...WE DON'T KNOW WHY"...instead of "perhaps she'll die".

Other than that...lots of fun!

Great book!

This is a great book. My 3&1/2 year old son loves it. We read a lot of books and this one has already been ready many times. We can pretty much recite the whole thing. Must say though, maybe instead of, "Perhaps she'll die" the author could of used something less grim. I don't mind it but for people who do, just know that "Perhaps she'll die" comes after each and everything she swallows.

I got tired of the "fly" version of this poem ...

I got tired of the "fly" version of this poem decades ago, and the "shell" version and others never really impressed me (I guess I'm tougher to please than I'd have thought...), UNTIL...she decided to swallow the entire Thanksgiving dinner! When I read it, I DON'T just "read" it, but we all SING it together, and the children I teach BEG for it, all autumn long!

Bought this book on a whim. Best whim I've had-I love this book. I really suggest the apple crepes --wonderful taste. My teens love them. Can't say enough about this book for flavor and taste, this book wins hands down over my old GF cookbooks. This book makes the transition to "GF" a breeze. I have a lot of books on GF but this one takes the cake is by far the best.

Great book for new gluten free cooks!

I am not a good cook. Since becoming gluten free I have started cooking my own food. A friend had this book and I flipped through it to view the recipes. I really liked them, so I bought it. Great price too! I have made the risotto recipe and it was amazing. My boyfriend ate it and raved about it. He doesn't like gluten free or rice, so I knew it was good! We made four recipes so far and loved them all!

not just tapicoa and white rice flour!

On the subject of baked products, I like this book because the all-purpose flour blend contains some flours that pump up the fiber. The gluten -free flour blend for breads also includes flours that are high in fiber.

Some of my favorite baked goods from this book include:
Olive & Herb focaccia with the wonder toppings including kalamata olives, rosemary, thyme, fresh minced garlic and Romano cheese.
Cinnamon Scones.
Strawberry shorcakes
fudge cookies , rich and chocolaty wiht semisweet choc chips ,butter and dutch process cocoa powder (what a treat)

Our family loves eggplant, so we really like the midweek moussaka recipes ,
Salmon- potato flakes with mustard tartar sauce - so - good and a great tartar sauce with mayo, sour cream , course grain mustard, lemon juice and chopped pickle if you like.
Southern fied catfish with hush puppies.
flourless chocolate cake.
I feel the best part of the book is the flour blends , they work well and they have the fiber. A lot of the main dish recipes are just so so.

Kevin R. Seaman is a senior student of Dan Inosanto and one of the few to hold a full instructor's credential to teach Bruce Lee's Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do. He has been featured in the major martial arts magazines and has created two instructional martial arts videos.

The best in "traditional" Jun Fan material

Personally, this is one of my favorite books on the subject of Jeet Kune Do. It is different in that it presents the more traditional Jun Fan Gung Fu as opposed to the method of Jeet Kune Do. Not many books do this, as they go right into "what's new" in Jeet Kune Do. Although there is nothing wrong with that, Mr. Seaman shows the reader the value of the original Jun Fan material. He covers basic trapping, Jun Fan kickboxing kicks, boxing, stance movement, etc. Overall, this is a treasured book in my martial arts library, as it is rare in that it shows techniques and ideas that other books gloss over. Just my opinion.

Great textbook on Jun Fan Gung Fu

I take Jun Fan Gung Fu with an Inosanto teacher, and this book is the perfect textbook for what we do in class. The author does an excellent job of discussing principles, but also techniques. The pictures are clear, and the text only really contains things you need, without extra extrapolations on stuff you don't need to learn. This is an excellent textbook on JKD/Jun Fan.

High quality book by an Exceptional Sifu!

I have seen a number of books on Jeet Kune Do, but few that put it in terms so easily understood. I came to the study of Jeet Kune Do with a background of familiarity w/ Wing Chun. Many other books on Jun Fan seem to bear only slightly on the Wing Chun connection. This is understandable as Bruce Lee parted ways with much of that art, but it is at the root of his system, and Sifu Seaman does a wonderful job of showing Jun Fan's connection to Wing Chun principles. I would also say that, having spoken to him on the phone, his spirit of Hing-Dai (Kung Fu brotherhood) is most refreshing in a world of inflated egos. If you seek to understand the path of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, you really only need this book!

A Extremely Useful Resource!

My MLS Immunology professor used this book for our case studies, and it was a very helpful study guide as it explained basic concepts of Immunology different than a traditional textbook would. It really helps you understand the etiology and physiology of various disease states, AND you can read just like a regular book. Easy to understand and follow. I highly recommended.
