Good, but there's better ways...

I'll start with saying that I got a 780 on the Biology SAT test. I purchased both this book and the barron's book. I would recommend buying both if you wish to score in the 700's, especially in the high 700's. The Barron's book has a better sense of the test, and the PR book has a bit more information, with more extraneous information. Ultimately the test will differ from any books. However the Princeton will prepare you very well. Also, most of the people in my class that scored in the 700's used this book.

In my case in one month and a half of studying, with both books i could produce very good results. This book will help you to learn the format of the test and how to take advantage of it, as well as reinforcing your knowledge of the material as well. You will not regret buying this book

It didn't help much once I took that SAT Bio ...

It didn't help much once I took that SAT Bio on May 2. Had to rely on my AP knowledge to get me through the test. Had too much extraneous info that was not even mentioned. Of the entire book, only 1/4 of it kinda helped.

Necessity for Preparing

This book and Barron's SAT Biology together are what you need to do well on the SAT Biology E (I took the E one, not sure about M). I first read through the content in Barron's, then I used this book to reinforce all the concepts. I really love this book's practice tests, drills, and clear + easy to comprehend formatting, which, unfortunately, Barron's is lacking. However, the sacrifice is a little less information ... so that's why you should use Barron's with it. That's what I did, (along with studying consistently for my high school biology class and watching a crash course on Youtube) and it really helped me achieve a high score! Thanks, Princeton Review!

Como ocurrió hace más de una década, las academias de la lengua española y la editorial Alfaguara se unen a esta celebración con una reedición de este clásico universal dirigida a todo el ámbito hispanohablante.

Esta edición cuenta con un nuevo prólogo, escrito por Darío Villanueva, director de la Real Academia Española (RAE) y presidente de la Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (ASALE), especialmente para la ocasión. Se completa con un glosario formado por siete mil palabras, locuciones, frases proverbiales y refranes, explicados según el significado preciso que tienen en el texto cervantino.

La primera edición de este Quijote se convirtió en un gran éxito de ventas, sin precedentes en una obra clásica. Más de tres millones de ejemplares, distribuidos en España y América, la convirtieron en la más difundida de la historia. A conseguir su carácter divulgativo y su orientación hacia un público diverso y no especializado, contribuyen especialmente las notas contextualizadoras de la obra, preparadas por Francisco Rico. También se incluyen una serie de estudios complementarios, escritos por algunos de los principales expertos en el gran libro cervantino.

Así, Mario Vargas Llosa analiza la modernidad del Quijote en «Una novela para el siglo xxi»; Francisco Ayala reflexiona sobre la construcción de los personajes de la novela en «La invención del Quijote», y Martín de Riquer analiza la obra en el contexto biográfico del autor en «Cervantes y el Quijote». Por su parte, José Manuel Blecua («El Quijote en la historia de la lengua española»), Guillermo Rojo («Cervantes como modelo lingüístico»), José Antonio Pascual («Los registros lingüísticos del Quijote: la distancia irónica de la realidad»), Margit Frenk («Oralidad, escritura, lectura») y Claudio Guillén («Cauces de la novela cervantina: perspectivas y diálogos») abordan distintos aspectos relacionados con la lengua española en la obra cervantina.

Ten years ago, the Academies of the Spanish Language conceived of a Don Quixote for everyone. Now, it is being re-released—in a limited edition—to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Cervantes’s death.

2015 and 2016 bring with them two special Cervantes anniversaries. The celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the Publication of the Second Part of Don Quixote in 2015 will be followed in 2016 by the Commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’s Death. As they did more than a decade ago, the Academies of the Spanish Language and Alfaguara unite for this celebration with a re-edition of the universal classic directed at the whole Spanish-speaking world.

This edition boasts a new prologue written specially for the occasion by Darío Villanueva, the director of the Real Academia de la Lengua Española (RAE) (RAE) and president of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (ASALE). It is complemented by a glossary made up of seven thousand words, expressions, phrases and proverbs, each explained according to its precise meaning in Cervantes’s text.

The first edition of this Quixote became a huge sales success, unprecedented for a classic work. More than three million copies, distributed in Spain and the Americas, made it the most widespread in history. The contextualizing notes about the work, prepared by Francisco Rico, contribute to its educational character and its orientation toward a diverse and non-specialized public. It also includes a series of complementary studies, written by some of the primary experts in Cervantes’s consummate book.

As such, Mario Vargas Llosa analyzes the modernity of Don Quixote in “A Novel for the 21st Century;” Francisco Ayala reflects upon the construction of the novel’s characters in “The Invention of the Quixote;” and Martín de Riquer analyzes the work in the biographical context of the author in “Cervantes and Quixote.”

For their part, José Manuel Blecua (“Don Quixote in the History of the Spanish Language”), Guillermo Rojo (“Cervantes as a Linguistic Model”), José Antonio Pascual (“The Linguistic Registers of Don Quixote: The Ironic Distance from Reality”), Margit Frenk (“Orality, Writing, Reading”), and Claudio Guillén (“The Course of Cervantes’s novel: Perspectives and Dialogues”) deal with different aspects related to the Spanish language in Cervantes’s work.

Joining all this is the current director of the Real Academia de la Lengua Española (RAE), Darío Villanueva, who wants to “take advantage of the golden opportunity that the release of this new edition offers […] to give an explanation—my explanation—of some of the reasons for the high recognition that Don Quixote has gained from the date of its publication until today, as well as its clear modernity,” before reminding us that Don Quixote was the work chosen in 2002 as the best novel of all time, even ahead of In Search of Lost Time by Proust and War and Peace by Tolstoy, in a survey conducted by the Swiss Writers’ Association of 100 authors from around the world.

In 2004, coinciding with the celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the Publication of the First Part of Don Quixote, the Real Academia de la Lengua Española (RAE) and the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española began a project of editions of the great works of literature in Spanish. Conceived as a line of limited-circulation special commemorative editions of the great Spanish-language classics of all time, these works are published and distributed around the Spanish-speaking world by Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial under its Alfaguara imprint.

To date, in addition to Don Quixote, the collection includes editions of Cien años de soledad by Gabriel García Márquez, La región más transparente by Carlos Fuentes, Antología general by Pablo Neruda; En verso y prosa. Antología by Gabriela Mistral, and La ciudad y los perros by Mario Vargas Llosa.

Excelente libro, muy buena edición digital

Este libro es una maravilla. Recuerdo que siempre me ponían a leerlo en mis clases de Español cuando estaba en el colegio, y le daba largas porque no me gustaba. Es cierto que el lenguaje es un poco antiguo, pero la historia aquí contada es tan ingeniosa que supera con creces todo lo que yo haya conocido. Ahora que encontré esta edición para Kindle, me puse a leerlo de nuevo y es fascinante.

Esta edición digital me gusta por varias razones. La primera es que es directa, no tiene gran introducción y el lector puede comenzar a leer las aventuras desde el primer momento. El índice funciona bien, aunque en el lector para computadora se ve un poco extraño, pero logra su cometido. Tiene además las cartas iniciales en donde se especifica la tasa del libro, acompañada de la carta del rey y de varios poemas muy interesantes.

No puedo decir más. Un clásico.
¡Y pensar que fue escrito hace unos 400 años!

While it is a pretty book, color pictures

This review is for the Susaeta edition of Quijote. While it is a pretty book, color pictures, it is incomplete. It only has 28 of the 52 chapters for book 1, and 27 of the 74 chapters of book 2. Apparently this is a children's version, but Amazon has it listed with the standard version of the book. My biggest complaint is that Amazon has them all grouped together, so I thought I was getting a different version with a hard back cover. The reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because Amazon screwed up, not the publisher or seller. This book needs to be listed completely separately other version with a description that says it is an abridged version for children.

Could have been better!

This classic contains many antiquated words, therefore an abridged audio book version was welcome. Unfortunately, this production has flaws that prompted me to give up three quarters into it. Firstly, such a heavily abridged version should have concentrated on the main story, i.e. the adventures of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza, rather than get bogged in the many secondary stories. For instance, it contains too much of the soap-opera-like story of Don Fernando and Luscinda, while the episode where Don Quijote frees the convicts is only hinted at. In many places there are such gaps in the telling of these digressive secondary tales that you get lost. Replacing ancient word forms ("formosura") by their modern equivalents ("hermosura") was a good idea but why not do so throughout instead of only in the beginning? In fact there is a drop in quality towards the end and the undisputed talent of the speakers was wasted when they kept reading out sentences in an intonation out of step with their meaning ; or when they rendered whole sentences unintelligible by missing words (verbs, prepositions etc.). Had the speakers got bored with their job in the end? Were they running out of time or out of budget?

While I didn’t end up loving the book, I can appreciate the story’s message.

Tarryn Fisher has a distinct writing style that’s all her own and she’s back with a somewhat-different love story. Sadly, my issues with the characterization and overall plot prevented me from falling in love with Kit and Helena’s story. And it breaks my heart to say so.

Helena has a vivid and unsettling dream. In the dream, she and Kit are ridiculously in love. They have two kids—one is his—and live in Port Townsend, Washington and she’s a successful illustrator. But in real life, Kit and Helena are not in love. In fact, they barely even know each other. They live in Florida, and Helena doesn’t have an artistic bone in her body. Helena’s best friend, Della, has been dating Kit for five months and is already madly in love with him. Crap.

Despite having her own boyfriend, Helena can’t quite shake the feelings she felt in her dream. Love. Desire. Happiness. Kit should be hers. They should get their happily-ever-after. But what about Della? Hello, moral dilemma. This dream shifts Helena’s perspective and what she wants out of life, compelling her to make a change.

Helena is disorganized, a Ravenclaw turned Slytherin, a horrible artist, and in love with her best friend’s boyfriend. She’s “a lovely mess.” Kit is a writer, self-contained and self-aware, but completely oblivious to the fact that Helena dreamt of a life that includes the two of them and unknowingly caught in a web of unrequited forbidden love. Kit and Helena’s story is not an easy one—it has several ups and downs. But Helena’s evasive tendencies have the reader—and Kit—running to keep up with her.

I found Helena’s quirky characteristics to be a overly exaggerated to the point that she became a caricature. After her dream, Helena tries desperately to recreate the dream life she had with Kit. She takes art classes, starts drinking wine even though she’s a beer drinker, begins talking with Kit in hopes of making him love her back, sleeps with a wine cork because it reminds her of dream Kit. When all hope seems lost, she escapes Kit-saturated Florida, moves to his hometown, hunts down his ex-fiancée, and moves in with her—all in the name of self-discovery. While these things may have been added to make Helena seem "strange and quirky", it came off as manic and more than a a little bit crazy.

I think Fisher meant for the reader to laugh at her and I did—some of the time. Her internal monologue was quite funny in some moments. But with all of her strange habits and characteristics combined, she didn’t feel real to me at all. They felt completely forced, like the author was trying too hard to make her distinct and unique. I was unable to relate to her, which made it difficult for me to understand her actions.

In many ways, the romance in F*** Love felt like a rehash of Fisher’s Love Me With Lies series, but without the magic or chemistry. I felt no anxiety or desperation for Kit and Helena to be together. While there were some sweet moments between Kit and Helena that I liked, I’d hoped that this book would evoke the same emotions I get when reading a gripping love story—that “OMG I think I will die if they don’t end up together” feeling. Instead, I was left with the worst feeling of all—indifference.

It was almost like Fisher used the bones of her Love Me With Lies characters to create Helena, Della, and Kit. Kit’s character reminded me so much of Caleb (and even Isaac from Mud Vein). [LMWL SPOILERS OMITTED HERE]. Likewise, Helena is known to run away from love and life when things get tough or too emotional—much like Senna (of Mud Vein) and Olivia. While I loved the Love Me With Lies series, I was hoping for a hero and heroine that were completely new, not ones who so closely resembled past characters.

F*** Love lacked a cohesive plot and a sense of structure for the reader to grasp on to. Instead, this book fell victim to many other books’ pitfall—plot whiplash. There was very little resolution of one problem before another problem was thrown into the pot. There was no gradual building of conflict. Instead, the reader got a “and then this happened and then this happened and then this happened” sort of story.

Fisher is notorious for writing unconventional tales, taking her readers out of what’s ordinary and dropping them in the middle of the unexpected. That’s what F***Love was for me. It was unexpected. While I didn’t end up loving the book, I can appreciate the story’s message: Fight for what you want in life and don’t give up.

“Don’t be upset that you can’t attain constant happiness. It’s the quickest way to feel like a failure in life.”

Helena's dream changed her life. She saw herself married to her best friend's boyfriend, Kit. Now she can't help but to see him in a new light.

This is the Tarryn Fisher I love (I wasn't a fan of Marrow). The writing was fantastic, I couldn't put it down. I was dying to find out if Kit and Helena made it. Their path wasn't easy. And Fisher isn't known for traditional HEAs, if at all. So I was on the edge of my seat.

One thing I found surprising was how funny it was. It felt like some of Fisher's personality was injected into Helena. I liked her inner thoughts. Fisher wrote them in such a way that's more in tune with the way a person actually thinks. Sometimes choppy and random. I also like how Fisher doesn't rely on erotic scenes to make her books great. But the sexual tension is steamy enough in its own way.

By no means was this book perfect. Sometimes I was confused if we were dealing with the paranormal or not. There were some plot holes. Some things that didn't make sense. Some things I would have liked more information on. But...I didn't care. This book was original and it made me think and feeeeel and I'll carry it with me long after. And I love it when a book can do that. Bravo!

I'm just.... disappointed.

I don't want to get into a huge long discussion with spoilers so I'm just going to do a quick and dirty pros/cons list. Overall, I'm still glad I read the book. The message was important and sweet, and that's worth the read. It just wasn't the wonderful, thought provoking, powerful book I'd expected at this point in the author's career.

Pros:
- Good message regarding life philosophy's
- Interesting side characters (would love a book about Greer)
- Vivid writing and great author's voice, clearly talented
- The setting, I so wanted to move to Washington after this!

Cons:
- Massive amount of spelling and punctuation issues. Not like just typos but words in the wrong spots, punctuation missing, and it completely pulls you out of the story. Someone will start talking with no quotations and then there is a quotation at the end of the sentence, so I have to go back and re-read it again to realize that I'm not listening to narration. Or whole words wrong or missing (chunk vs. chuck), like super obvious mistakes that even the most mediocre editors would have picked up..... this is hugely surprising from such a big author and that really bothered me because her readers deserved better at this point in her career.
- Inconsistent story line. Every single time the main characters talk on the phone, she mentions that it's the first time she's heard his voice on the phone. Did she forget all the other times? Why? Is there some sort of psychological issue here we're supposed to pick up on? Amnesia from her dream that also had amnesia in it? I'm confused.
- The main characters are very weak. It's not a love story you want to root for. I didn't want them to be together in the end. She seriously deserved better than Kit. He's the kind of man who you would tell your daughters they deserve better, because she's chasing after him the whole book and he's dangling her along. She completely debases and devalues herself and he lets her. The disrespect he shows her is horrifying. She does so much for him and he just keeps stringing her along.... it didn't make sense. There wasn't a strong or valid reason for it shown to us. But to be honest, he deserved better than Helena too. She's seriously flaky and runs away from everything and doesn't ever really grow from that. We are told she does in the epilogue a bit, but.... we never see it or feel it. She just acts like a child from day one and doesn't ever grow up.
- Going from the last point.... it seriously would have been a more powerful book if they hadn't ended up together. Helena could have grown and showed she valued herself more and that she really found herself. She didnt need him to complete her. That didn't happen in this book at all, she is still codependent even with the HEA. There's no real romance in the book at all, it's more a coming of age book about Helena growing and finding herself, so I think it honestly would have really excelled as a women's fiction novel with Helena as the main focus. F*** love could have been perfect, because it would have been that moral all the way through. As it stands now, the title doesnt make any sense because she literally does everything, including lose herself, for love.
- I feel like there's some sort of underlying story or psychological point we're supposed to have picked up in Helena. I mean, she does some seriously concerning things. She constantly is forgetting everything, including who she is. She has zero motor skills and can't get through one meal without it all on her shirt (one time can be cute, all the time.... see a doctor. Something is wrong). She turns to alcohol for everything and is drunk quite often. She is a completely codependent enabler, and seems to know that and be fine with it. She chases men across the country and stalks their ex girlfriends. She throws fits and lets people treat her horribly. It's just....something is clearly wrong, and it's hinted at more than once in the book that's something is wrong with her... but we're not told what? We're not given more insight or background into what her diagnosis is or how she improves her life.
- The dream really didn't make much sense. It was the whole point of the book and yet it really wasn't woven into the books much. The scenery in the dream was, but the kids in the dream didn't make any sense with what ends up happening and it's just confusing. It seemed too convenient, and a good idea but not really executed properly.
- Random side plots thrown in that have nothing to add to the story and are just confusing (i.e.: [SPOILER] suddenly in the last scene we find out there's a cult leader chasing after her??? What? Who? Why? Huh?)

Anyways, I'm not trying to be a downer. I was just really looking forward to this one. After the progress in the author's career over the last year and how much she's grown, I had such high hopes and wanted something amazing to blow the socks off me at the start of 2016. That wasn't this book. I'll still try her next book and hope this was a fluke, because I still believe in the author.
