Beyond Belief

Here's the thing:

Once you read this book, you'll never forget it. It will give you such a case of the creeps you may conveniently leave it behind when you move house; donate it to the library; but it will stick with you and you'll be drawn to it, because to this day, there is really no explanation for these crimes. And no resolution for the emotions you will be left with after reading about them. Caveat emptor.

Williams' has aptly titled his book "Beyond Belief". He has reconstructed his narrative from research, interviews, and police and trial materials (now sealed until 2027). He's tried to make a kind of map to try and find the answer, the motives for these killings. What it turns out to be is more of a maze.

He takes everything into account about the killers; he knows their backgrounds, their upbringings, the era; he knows how they spent their time, what they read, ate and drank, what they talked about. He's seen (and heard) the evidence of their crimes. What shocks him and the reader the most is the complete banality of these murders. The cruelty in the choice of victim; the almost bad-fairy-tale-like concept of the innocent child beguiled into the gingerbread house, which turns out to be inhabited by witches and monsters.

Probably the most disturbing thing about this couple is they did not fit the profile of the usual type of killer. Nobody saw it coming; and it is this element that shows such extreme cruelty. That this was the part they deliberately enjoyed is the irredeemable aspect, which has made them unworthy of anything but contempt.

Williams leaves the actual crimes in the ether, where they haunt us. He leaves description till the last one - where he has an eyewitness account.

The rest of the book is the incredible story of how the killers were caught and brought to trial. The way they were arrested was pure karma; but the way the bulk of the evidence of other crimes was found turned on a coincidence so tiny that, had it not been discovered, the results don't bear thinking about.

Trials are over quickly in England; there was no longer a death penalty, and the judge regretted this and stated publicly that they should be "put down".

Ian Brady has since been diagnosed as insane; Myra Hindley is dead. These days, we know more about "predators"; we still can't find them early enough to stop them, but we are apprehending them more quickly. Yet psychiatrists still can't discover quite what it is, apart from some genetic aberration, a throwback. All we really know is that they're out there. And the more knowledge we have, the more protected our kids will be.

One of the Best True Crime Books Ever Written.

I have always been interested in crime, and have read so many true-crime tomes that often i will be partway through a book and realize, "wait, i have read this one before". its easy to write a rag about a sensational crime- it isn't easy to create a masterpiece. this book is a masterpiece.

when i first began it, i had to stop myself from reading it too quickly, because it was so well-written and absorbing and such a change from the usual crime-tripe that i didn't want it to end. it must be said here that i am a normal, healthy female who is also a pacifist and a vegetarian- therien lies the fascination with these types. the only other true-crime book i have ever read that came close in quality was "helter skelter". as far as sheer knowledge, "hs" wins over this one. i have never learned so much about law as i have from that book. but in terms of sheer creepiness, hauntingness, this book surpasses most novels and 99.9 true crime books ever written.

emyln williams does a brilliant job of "being there", putting himself in shoes of the victims as they are whistling their way home and that fateful moment when they hear a van pulling up behind them. most all of it is told in first-person, and most often in a manchurian patois that is endlessly fascinating for anglophiles like myself.

but again, i have to underline this books sheer eerieness. it reminds me of "virgin suicides"- ephemeral, almost otherworldly, in the midst of the swinging sixties and northern england industry. if you don't read this book and are a fan of true crime, you are doing yourself a disservice.

Masterwork

This book is in my top ten list of books from any genre.
It is an atmospheric and detailed portrait of the social landscape that spawned the likes Hindley and Brady. Through his lilting prose, that resonates with the musical dialect of Northern England, Emlyn Williams hypnotically recreates an almost aerial view of the cities, towns, streets and bleak interiors where these horrific events took place and then systematically moves in to locate the perpetrators and the victims within this grey tapestry.
His research and unstinting provision of detail of such a dark but important subject matter is meticulous, his weaving into this factual account of the fictionalised private moments and primitive motivations of the killers' mundane but deadly, secret world is masterful and only adds to our insight of the psychology of evil.
I consider this a masterwork written in a unique voice by a genius mind.

About the Author
Classical guitar technique pedagogue Richard Stadler began playing classical guitar when he was 11 years old. When he was 16 years old he went to study at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy where he graduated from in 1998. Due to complications from occupation related hand injuries Stadler gave up playing guitar for years, until 2008 when Nicholas Lambson totally rebuilt his playing Technique and Dr. Tasmin Cordie began to help him heal from chronic inflammation issues related to his diet. Stadler is now concertizing again, and released his first solo album this February. Stadler performs and writes original classical guitar music and is known for his extravagant opening tuning compositions. His meditative playing style is both powerful and delicate to the ear. Stadler is also a much sought after classical guitar teacher famous for his 7 month Technical Boot Camp Course. Stadler is excited about all the recent positive feedback on his book, "45 Minute Classical Guitar Mastery" and hopes his technical training continues to be shared with the world. THE MATERIAL IN THIS BOOK HAS BEEN STOLEN.

I am the author's mentor. I was very proud to have helped him regain the ability to play the guitar, and to be able to do so professionally. He expressed his gratitude by stealing years of my work.

This book should never have gone into print. The methodology, the exercises, and the tips and tricks are all things I taught him and are going into my own publication.

A true view of a commonly misunderstood lifestyle

In writing The Polyamorists Next Door: Inside Multiple-Partner Relationships and Families, Elisabeth Sheff tackles a tough topic with objectivity, sensitivity, and grace. Sheff shows that polyamory is a positive family model. With personal experience and fifteen years of research, Sheff presents all aspects of polyamory through a deeply informed lens.

I like how Sheff addresses the more positive aspects as well as the less positive. It is incredibly important to understand fully any chosen way of life; whether that way of life is a religion, a diet, or a family model. Sheff discusses the difficulties of defining polyamory, and who practices polyamory. She writes about how adults view polyamory, how children within polyamorous families view polyamory, and how neighbors, schools, and Child Protective Services view polyamory.

I especially appreciate her insight into her own experiences with polyamory. It is not easy to transition into or out of a polyamorous relationship, and Sheff opens her life for the reader. This adds validity to her research. Without the personal stories, this would be little more than a long (well written) scholarly review journal article. The personal stories show me that this information is not just a theory rather, a true representation of the lifestyle.

While no book can be the definitive presentation (i.e.: the one to read while ignoring all others), I believe anyone researching polyamory should pick up this one. I find it true to life, authentic, and comprehensive.

A Polyamory Book for Monogamists

There is a lot of fascinating information in The Polyamorists Next Door, and many polyamorists will enjoy reading it to see the results of Dr. Sheff’s studies of polyamory. Poly parents will find interesting (and useful!) information in the sections on children raised in poly families.

However at the end of the day, this book isn’t written for us. Instead, it is the book polyamory has needed for decades. A book written not for people who want to be polyamorous, but for monogamists who want to understand polyamory. You know the question that pops up in every poly forum eventually “What book can I get for my (parents/friends/siblings/friends) to help them understand polyamory?”

The answer is: this one

Brace for Science-Speak
This is not a coffee table book. This is not light reading. This is a book written by a professional researcher. And it shows. Books like this take me so long to read because academics and researchers are really good at writing for other academics and researchers. Unfortunately, the writing style used in academics and research is not what the rest of us are used to. Complex sentences are the norm in this book. Reading it, there were many times when I had to stop and re-read a seemly simple sentence. “I know every word in this sentence, it is perfectly grammatical. Why can I not understand what she is saying?!”

I did, eventually, figure it out.

Let me clear say: this is not a criticism of Dr. Sheff’s writing. This is the norm for popular sciences books (as well as philosophy, and several other fascinating subjects). Some professions just seem to lead to a very complicated writing style. (Bill Bryson has written the only popular science book I could easily read–because he isn’t a scientist, he’s a journalist writing about science. See the difference?)

If you enjoy popular science books written by actual researchers you’ll find The Polyamorists Next Door right up your alley. If this style of writing is new to you, it may take you some time to adjust. Take it slow, and you’ll get through.

Well Worth the Read
This isn’t a book review blog, so I’m not going to give The Polyamorists Next Door any kind of star rating. I will say that it is a very valuable book that the poly community has needed for a long time. I think it is well worth picking up a copy. Read it, then add The Polyamorists Next Door to your personal lending library. Share with friends, family, and anyone else who is willing to learn more about polyamory.

This is an excellent book. This book isn't just for people who practice polyamory or are interested in polyamory, this book is just interesting for the sake of understanding alternative lifestyles. This book covers what seems like everything. From pros to cons, conflict resolution, even how it can effect the children involved in the household. I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds interest in alternative lifestyles. This is one of the most fascinating books I've read in quite some time.

Perfect explanation of functional style of programming

The functional programming is a hot topic these days as it can potentially be the effective response to necessity of adopting software to multicore hardware architecture. In effect, the elements of functional programming have been successively introduced into all mainstream languages, most of which gained these features quite long time ago. Java had lacked these facilities until the version 8 was released. Fortunately, that version catches it up and brings this language back to the family of modern languages.
This book explains very clearly and profoundly all functional elements introduced into Java. What is the most important, the author always tries to confront the functional approach with the traditional, imperative style of programming. As a result, the reader gains the clear comparison between these two different styles of programming.
The author of this book is the additional factor assuring reader satisfaction. Venkat Subramaniam is the recognized and experienced expert in the domain of programming languages without whom hardly any reputable conference about Java can be held. If his perfect teaching skills and sense of humour are also taken into account, further encouraging to reading this book seems unnecessary.
Finally, I must admit that the community of software developers have just been enriched by the next valuable book. If you want to catch on the main sense of functional approach and get benefits from its declarative style and better scalability, you must definitely read this book.

Excellent guide for experienced Java developers

This is an excellent book for experienced Java developers who want to learn the new functional programming (FP) aspects of Java 8. Highly recommended.

Throughout the book, Venkat shows how to implement simple examples that are easy to wrap your head around using the old imperative style of Java, and then rewrites the examples using FP. That approach is very effective and accomplishes two things:

1. Having both imperative and FP implementations of the same examples make it much easier to understand the FP implementations because experienced Java developers can relate FP to the way they're used to writing code. Without the imperative versions, I don't think the FP versions would be nearly as clear to experienced Java developers without a FP background.

2. The differences between the imperative and FP versions of the code are striking. The FP versions are shorter, simpler, and once you are comfortable with the FP constructs, easier to understand. And by avoiding mutable objects, you don't have to deal with trying to get your code to work properly in a multi-threaded environment - something that is nearly impossible with imperative Java.

The main difference between imperative and FP is that with the former, you specify how you want to do things, whereas with FP, you specify only what you want to do, leaving the details to FP constructs such as the map() function. Venkat's approach makes that difference abundantly clear.

If you're new to Java, then this is probably not the book for you. However, if you've been writing imperative Java code for a while, I can't imagine a better way to learn the functional aspects of Java 8.

Finally, it's important to realize that Java 8 adds FP on top of imperative Java, which reminds me of the way C++ added OOP on top of C. As a result, some of the FP aspects of Java 8 are not as simple as in functional languages built with FP from the ground up, such as Clojure. Java 8 does not have first class functions, for example, so things like the Functional interface are a bit convoluted. Venkat does a fine job of guiding you through those rough spots, however.

Disclaimer: Venkat is a friend that I've known for a long time.

Basic introduction to functional programming for the traditional Java OO programmer

Venkat is an electric, hilarious, and knowledgable public speaker which prompted my purchase of this book. I was disappointed as it is very introductory. If you've followed any of his Scala talks or know the basics of functional programming, this book doesn't offer more content. The book is probably targeting complete functional newbies, and that is fine, but I was disappointed. I would still recommend his unique and creative presentations on YouTube or live if you can.
