A drum education classic!

The practice systems in this book will without question expand your abilities on the drums, making you a better improviser, improving your coordination, and giving you a greater command of displacement and the ability to move ideas around in your phrasing (including over the bar phrases and polyrhythmic-sounding ideas). Mark presents a detailed system to improve your playing in various areas (dynamics, rate, orchestration, phrasing), and along the way you'll be asked to develop your own ideas using his template. It's one of the few drum books I've seen that gives you a process for learning drums that results in you creating your own ideas, not just copying what's in the book.

Mark Guiliana reveals his methods for developing creativity. You begin to understand how Mark became such a monster musician; practice, practice, practice. Smart practice. In this book he's not showing you how to play like him, but how to develop your own creativity through the systems he has used to develop. This is a study in how to practice and get the most out what you can do, rather than a method book full of licks, grooves and fills. Mark encourages taking these concepts and making them your own. In fact, he sounds genuinely excited to know he is lighting the creative spark in others. This text is likely to become a classic for those drummers looking to find their unique voice and develop their command of the instrument. I look forward to bringing Mark's concepts into my own playing.

The video content, including examples, open solos and band performances are perfect to further illustrate the book's concepts.

Awesome collection of scary stories!

I first read this book when I bought it in the 5th grade from those catalogs we use to get in school for the scholastic book fairs (remember those). It totally blew me away!
Comparable to such masters of young horror as Alvin Schwarz or RL Stine. Easy reading and very entertaining for kids! If you have a kid between the ages of 9 and 14 who loves scary stories this is a perfect book for them, as well as the rest of J.B. Stampers Tales for the Midnight Hour Collections and the Night Frights Collections.

Some tales of this book include The Gecko: story of a man who releases a pet gecko in his apartment but soon realizes to his horror that it is no ordinary gecko! Voices: story of a girl who's best friend has been hearing voices that predict things to come! Other great stories too!
This book is out of print though so it may be a bit harder to get but it is possible to pick up a copy online for around or under 5 bucks. Definately check out the other collections I mentioned, you won't be disappointed!

Even More Chillers for Young Readers

This collection of scary stories appeals mostly to the very young reader. Each story is quite short and simple. The typical story has a short build-up with a simple shock ending like "there was a skeleton at the door." Stories lack the resolutions older or more accomplished readers will want but for the style they are really rather entertaining.

The stories range widely in their focus. The reader meets monsters, vampires, witches, bad fortunes and all manner of scary thing.

This is the fourth in a series. It has also been collected with the third volume (STILL MORE TALES FOR THE MIDNIGHT HOUR) in another book called TALES FOR THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, VOLUME TWO (ISBN 0-7607-6776-9).

Creativity beyond reasoning

The second volume of Janet Frame's autobiography traces her development as a writer from teacher training days, through her short-lived teaching career (ending with her walking out of class and never looking back, with which I can wholeheartedly empathise) to her being mentored twenty-four hours a day by the established New Zealand writer, Frank Sargeson. Despite her failure to understand his homosexual leanings, the warmth of her relationship and appreciation of his friendship are transparent.
An Angel At My Table is a worthwhile read for any aspiring author first setting out - Janet's way of writing is described with humour and insight. We are even told how Frank Sargeson seemed to be rather taken aback by the relative ease of her writing, not realising that, whenever he came within earshot she would start typing `This is the forest primeval, the murmuring pines and the hemlock speak and in accents disconsolate answer the wail of the forest' over and over again, alternating this with the slightly less erudite `The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog'. After all, she did not wish her mentor to suspect her of lack of productivity!
Though she only briefly refers to her many years spent in Seacliff Hospital, the mental anguish and emotional turmoil of these years clearly is shown to result in her greater self-awareness and appreciation. She writes: "I was taking my new status seriously. If the world of the mad were the world where I now officially belonged (lifelong disease, no cure, no hope) then I would use it to survive, I would excel in it. I sensed that it did not exclude my being a poet." At which point I put the book down, gave a great whoop of delight and danced around the room. You see, I, too, am a poet *wry grin*

Not what you expect

I was hesitant to read this three part book. I recall that I enjoyed the movie but did not feel like reading a heavy mental hospital book. It was chosen for me by book club and my move to NZ. How wrong I was. This is a celebration of life, books, family and travel. Janet Frame brings vividly to life the countryside and all it's inhabitants of the times. Anyone who enjoys great writing from a clever, different and funny author must read these three novels, sometimes released as one as they were on my kindle edition.

About the Author
Dimitrios Pavlou is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Stavanger in Norway. In 2014 he was elected a full member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences. He has had twenty years of teaching and research experience in the fields of finite elements, boundary elements, mechanics of solids, and fracture mechanics. Prof. Pavlou has published many research publications and authored/edited five books and conference proceedings. He is a reviewer in more than 18 international journals and has participated as a plenary speaker and session chair in many international conferences. Today he is a Research Group Leader (Faggruppeleder) of the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Group

Best of all, he's a gifted writer who possesses a delightfully devilish sense of humor. In these essays, which range widely but mostly focus on the relationships between biology and human behavior, hard and intricate science is handled with a deft touch that makes it accessible to the general reader. In one memorable piece, Sapolsky compares the fascination with tabloid TV to behavior he's observed among wild African baboons. "Rubber necks," notes the professor, "seem to be a common feature of the primate order." In the title essay of The Trouble with Testosterone, Sapolsky ruminates on the links, real or perceived, between that hormone and aggression.

A sparkling set of essays by MacArthur awardee Sapolsky (Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers, 1993; Biology and Neuroscience/Stanford), who is not at all afraid to go out on a (primate) limb to discuss biology, brain, and behavior. As a veteran baboon watcher, he has much to say on stress and hormones, adolescence, and other fascinating topics. In some essays he is merely out to set the record straight. So we learn in the title essay that higher testosterone levels do not increase aggression, but that aggression increases testosterone levels. Even if you give massive amounts of hormone to a monkey who, let us say, is number three in a dominance hierarchy, he will tyrannize numbers four and five but still kowtow to the two above him. Other baboon-based essays become springboards for discussion of commonalities between them and us, for example, in voyeurism: Baboons like to watch, too. They are easy targets for junk food, and adolescence is a markedly stress-filled period in which male baboons appear to be programmed to leave the troop and join another, invariably as low man on the totem pole. In other essays Sapolsky makes perturbing leaps: Are the sundry neurological disorders he glibly describes (epilepsy, Huntington's disease, Tourette's syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder) truly representative of a continuum of behavior? Are the founders and leaders of religion ``schizotypal'' personalities? Arguable, certainly, but always interesting. Elsewhere Sapolsky, who summers in Kenya, writes of the predicament of the African middle class- -infatuated with Western diets and cultures while trapped in the persistent rhythms of the old ways. In the end it is the refreshing honesty of this scientist- teacher, his zeal to speculate as well as to clearly present the facts, that engages the reader. A great collection of essays by a brilliant writer

Is it possible for a man who has won a MacArthur genius grant to be underappreciated? Reading this set of essays I have to wonder why Sapolsky is not as widely read and commented on as Dawkins, Sacks, Gleick and those other few at the absolute pinnacle of popular science writing.

The tales here cover his familiar subjects: the mind and emotions (one is tempted to say the soul), stress and our reactions, and how brain chemistry effects us every day. He also relates anecdotes from his baboon observations, and in the most touching essay talks about his father's life and death. The essays are gathered from several years and several magazines and each stands on its own...there is no particular theme beyond the aforementioned subject matter. The best is probably about how we sometimes take on the identity of another: illustrated by an anecdote where he watched Stephen Hawking give a lecture "through" the voice and body of a vigorous young graduate student, and Sapolsky's own odd reaction to his father's death. It is interesting, mildly disturbing and raises some ideas about individuality I certainly had never considered. In another essay, Sapolsky describes why so many illnesses have the same symptoms (its because it is our own immune systems that make us feel so crummy). Elsewhere he draws parallels betweens kids going off to college and male baboons switching tribes, and in yet another essay compares aging in baboons and humans.

So, should you read this book?

"Yes", if you have read other Sapolsky books and are looking for more.

"Yes", if you have heard about Sapolsky and want an introduction before diving into one of the larger works (though I still think 'A Primate's Memoir' is the best place to start).

"Yes", if you are interested in the brain and/or like good science writing.

Brain food from a fantastic teacher...

The same qualities that make Sapolsky one of the most popular teachers at Stanford come through in his writing. Although I was an English major, I took his human behavioral biology class because the man has a well-deserved reputation for being entertaining and thought-provoking. If you attend one of his lectures, you'll find students from all disciplines, all wide-awake. Sapolsky makes the biology of the human condition come to life without compromising the integrity of its scientific underpinnings. This book is especially recommended to those with an interest in biology or psychology, but the appeal is universal.

A marvelous read to squeeze between scholarly articles

Robert Sapolsky has written a wonderful, fun and terribly informative book, and it's a lovely break to anyone who wants to put their endocrinology articles aside for a night and read something a little smoother. I loved "Curious George's Pharmacy" so much I devoted a day in my Great Apes syllabus to a discussion of pharmacognacy and assigned that chapter as a reading. I also quite enjoyed the last chapter on the "heterozygote's advantage" of schizotypal disorder as the root of major world religions (and read the bit about Martin Luther's clear obsessive-compulsive behaviors aloud to my boyfriend, where we both got a good gasp and a laugh). As an anthropologist and a student of primate endocrinology myself, I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the biological basis of human behavior.

After years of waiting, I finally held a copy of Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter by Lloyd Kahn in my hands. I have rarely been this enthusiastic about a book, and not just because I am in it!

Ever since his first publication of Shelter in 1973 (which I also contributed to), Lloyd has been collecting imagery and stories for this eventual sequel. Shelter, a black and white over-sized catalog of unusual building, has become legendary as a book of inspiration for several generations of free-spirited home builders. The fact that it is still in print after 30 years attests to the durability of its significance. This seminal book heralded the emergence of geodesic domes and strawbale homes, as well as the influence of vernacular building styles from around the world on North American architecture.

With Home Work, Lloyd has gone beyond the glory of his earlier work in many ways. Not only does it seem more comprehensive, but it is almost entirely in color. This is a sumptuous coffee table book that will likely not spend much time on the table, since it is so intriguing you just want to pick up and browse through it. Every page is chock full of fun, unusual, lyrical, quaint, artistic, humble, elegant, practical, colorful, whimsical, well-crafted, funky, traditional, and outlandish buildings that were lovingly built by the hands of those who reside there. The builders themselves are portrayed as lovingly as their buildings, with many profiles of fine craftsmen and women sprinkled throughout. In fact, the book begins by featuring the work of ten artisans who represent some of the best in this tradition of owner-builders. Then a whole slew of other specific homes are displayed in such a way that the lifestyle of their occupants is embedded directly within the imagery. This book depicts far more than architecture; it shows entire ways of life.

Half a dozen people who have dedicated their lives to the promotion of natural building are profiled, along with some of the fruit of their labors. It is in this section that my wife and I find ourselves, with a description of our earthbag/papercrete home. What an honor it is to be part of such a fine work of art as this book. We are in the company of Bill and Athena Steen, Catherine Wanek, Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley, and others.

Lloyd has included examples of a variety of world-renowned photographers whose work graces the pages with imagery from India, Mongolia, Togo, Indonesia, Vietnam, Venezuela, New Guinea, Greece, Hong Kong, Nepal, Bali, Germany, Thailand, and Turkey, among other places. The way these exotic places are merged with the more familiar North American imagery makes everything seem exotic, or in another way of seeing, it all seems quite normal.

There is a section of buildings that derive their inspiration from fantasy and whimsy. This includes the surprising and almost garish flying concrete work of Steve Kornher in Mexico, along with a sculptural home carved out of the Arizona desert created by Michael Kahn, Lloyd's cousin. A Nevada house made of recycled glass bottles contrasts with delicate tropical treehouses in Hawaii and China.

Then we go on the road with Lloyd, as he chronicles trips that he made over the last 30 years. He photographed country homes that caught his eye along the Mississippi River, lovely and simple architectural elegance in Nova Scotia, old farm buildings of Utah and Nevada, tropical abodes in Costa Rica, and simple living in Baja California.

Continuing with the tradition that Lloyd established in the original Shelter book, there are a bunch of images of unusual housecars or rolling residences. My original school bus home was featured in the first book. This time there is a donkey train pulling a rolling homestead, complete with goats and chickens. There are several gypsy wagons, both self-propelled and not. There is log home on wheels, as well as various buses and vans. Lots of fun.

A chapter on living lightly features descriptions and diagrams of tipis, yurts, tents, make-shift structures, and traditional native American homes. There is enough information in these pages to be able to construct many of these dwellings.

Another love that Lloyd manifests is for old barns of all types. There are photos and diagrams of many of these fine buildings. In fact old buildings of all sorts attract his eye, and we see them from Oregon to Nepal, and from Hungary back to California, where Lloyd still resides in a funky little place on the coast of Marin County. Thank you Lloyd Kahn for such a wonderful trip!

Lloyd Kahn Understand You.

This is the best book of it's type that I have encountered. There are a lot of people out there building interesting structures with their own hands in their own way. For those who either are doing this or aspire to it, there isn't much out there in the way of books or cheerleading.

'Home Work' focuses largely on interesting homes built by baby-boomers who may or may not call themselves hippies, but are generally coming out of the 'back to the land' movement of the 60's and 70's that is generally associated with that subculture. This may or may not have been intentional on the part of the author. There is also a heavy West-coast bias at work. Every builder profiled seems to have a sauna & a beard and I could swear there's a pot plant in the foreground of one of the photos.

Honestly the stuff that the hippies started building 30 years ago is probably the cream of the 'interesting' owner-built homes in America. They had the will to build on their own, the low budgets that force creativity and building codes in rural areas were not quite so common as they are today. The timing was just right. Lloyd Kahn has found some of the coolest buildings that resulted from that hiccup of pioneering in the modern era, photographed them beautifully and humanized the builders.

Kahn takes time out half way through the book to celebrate simply-built structures and the joy of encountering them by presenting a series of photgraphic essays documenting his travels through regions thick with soulful buildings. Do you find yourself slowing down when you drive past solemn timber-framed barns or ramshackle sheds? Lloyd Kahn understands you. He has thoughtfully provided a number of pages of 'barn porn' for the junkies among us.

'Home Work' is a great source of not only ideas but affirmation that other people are in fact building some wierd stuff in the middle of nowhere and happily living in it. Perhaps it will give you the confidence you need to finally take the plunge.

What? No hobbit hole?

Well, this book has everything in it a person could want. 'Cept maybe a hobbit dwelling. Of course, there's so much imagination and so many ideas, that it wouldn't take much to come up with a very comfy hobbit hole. Now instead of just retiring, I'm dreaming of coming up with something unique that I can work on after I retire. And somehow I find myself coming back to this book for more and more ideas.... this book's dangerous!!!
