About the Author
My lifelong relationship with nature and natural landscapes began in the forest, fields, mountains, streams and seashores of New England. When I was 12, my family moved to California, where we explored the High Sierra, the Pacific Coast, and everything in between. I traded Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond for John Muir's Range of Light. On cross-country road trips I captured photos on a Kodak Instamatic camera, but a year-long photography class in 8th grade introduced me to exposure and composition, and I practiced developing and printing 35 mm film. I was inspired and moved by the work of Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, who were shooting at that time the same mountains and valleys that I was exploring, hiking, fishing, camping, backpacking, and skiing in.   Upon graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, my first job was as an applications engineer for the Graphic Printing and Imaging Division at Tektronix, where I received a sound foundation in digital imaging.  The arrival of affordable digital cameras promised to put the full end-to-end photographic process in the hands of any photographer with a computer, so I jumped in with both feet, eagerly adopting four new models from 2001 - 2006. My divorce in 2006 left me free to pursue photography full time. I won awards in photography contests, and licensed photos to National Geographic, Old Earth Almanac, Outdoor Photographer Magazine, and many others. I was invited to teach photography in 2009, and by 2012 my photography workshops covered several national parks, the Eastern Sierra, and night photography in the ghost town of Bodie State Historic Park.  I have been living in the Eastern Sierra, not far from Bodie, since 2010.  Having visited the park for decades now, I am honored to have raised over $25,000 for building stabilization in Bodie through my workshops there. We can't predict what will happen in our lives tomorrow, but we can look back and see all of the small influences and decisions that led us to where we are today.  Happiness is when you wouldn't want to have arrived anywhere else. In recent years my path has often led me through and east of Ansel Adams' Yosemite, and through and north of Galen Rowell's Eastern Sierra, and that sure seems like paradise to me. Great book by one of my favorite photographers!

What an awesome book! I pre-ordered this without hesitation, as the author is one of my favorite photographers (I discovered him on Flickr). This book is very detailed and contains all the necessary tips to get that perfect shot.

I also own the Northern California book (it is not by the same author) and there is some overlap in the areas the books cover, but if you're into photographing California, get both books!

My favorite chapters are the ones that focus on the Eastern Sierra/Yosemite, as these are my favorite spots to visit and photograph. I even discovered some spots I didn't know about in the area -- and I thought I knew all of them! Unfortunately, I do not live in California, so I can't put this book to use until my vacations next spring and summer, so this book will be used for some planning this winter!

As much as I loathe taking books on airplanes (I use my kindle), THIS will be going in my backpack!

My only criticism is that that photos should be bigger -- most, with the exception of the chapter headers, are thumbnail size, which doesn't do justice to the author's amazing photography.

You never know where you might be in SoCal so just keep it in your car!

When I heard Jeff was releasing his book, I pre-ordered the same day. While I've never met in person, I've followed Jeff for about four years, on Facebook, Flickr and email. One of these days I hope my schedule will allow me to take one of his Bodie workshops.

I'm a California native and have frequented several of the areas covered in the book. Having taken up photography several years ago, his book is a fantastic resource with lots of information for me, as well as anyone who is interested in Souther California.

I recently returned from the Eastern Sierra and having his book along for the trip was a great asset. I'm not physically able to do long, strenous hikes, so having detailed information on the types of hikes was perfect.

Having history of the locations and detailed directions was an added bonus

Another plus is Jeff's photography, as well as the contributing photographers.

Don't hesitate to purchase, you won't be disappointed!

Love this!

I am a big fan of Jeff's work and have been following it for quite some time so when he announced he was writing this book I knew I would be pre-ordering it. I do not own the other books in the series so I don't have anything to compare it with, but I really like the succinct nature of the book.
Find the area you will be traveling, scan the chapter for locations you will be photographing or want to photograph, read a bit on it and recieve some advice on getting to it and getting the best shot. Living in California myself I am constantly amazed at all of the undiscovered areas I have not been to, hopefully this book will help me see more of this beautiful state.

I value Schubert's insights into teaching counterpoint to modern students.

I admire this book quite a bit. I was disappointed to see the 3-star review with extensive errata listed, but it does not bother me excessively (other than to reinforce the point: proofread many times when you write! because these appear to be mostly typos and the result of an over-hasty production schedule.) The book has so much in its favor, I for one can live with the typos because I so value Schubert's insights into teaching counterpoint.

Schubert has extensive hands-on classroom experience teaching counterpoint, and has adapted the methods of species counterpoint for his own students who have often been, apparently, undergraduates with limited skills. He breaks down the virtual sea of minute and oppressive rules (Jeppesen in particular, among other authors, gives rules to hell and back) into very logical units, and his distinction between "hard" and "soft" rules is very welcome. He gives exercises with a two-note cantus firmus to allow the student to begin with baby steps.

Hence, my opinion is that this is a very valuable book precisely for those beginners who have found other counterpoint textbooks daunting.
A note to the student: Species counterpoint is a very artificial, although very valuable, practice. The rules vary from one author to the next like the local rules of some card games. Just play the game! It's fun - like sudoku for musicians. The rules conceal certain didactic goals, chief of which, IMO, is not to teach "Renaissance Style" - which happens to be the conventional "cover story" for this practice - but to teach some basic ideas about pure triadic harmony which are the grammatical bases of all tonal music in our tradition since c. 1500 up to and past jazz (whether they apply to 20th and 21st century atonal and post-tonal techniques I am not competent to say as I don't practice those styles).

Comprehensive introduction to Renaissance-style counterpoint

Peter Schubert is on the faculty of McGill University. As a first-time teacher of species counterpoint I am impressed by this book's organization, clarity of explanation and vast quantity of practice exercises. For the sake of the beginner student fine nuances of style are skipped, especially in the early chapters, in favor of a thorough grounding in rules, divided into "hard" and "soft" categories. The former are regarded as unyielding benchmarks of correctness, while the latter have to do more with stylistic ease and euphony. The sheer quantity of rules may overwhelm some students; careful explanation by the instructor is necessary to avoid glazed-over eyes and discouragement. At least in my edition there is as yet no attempt to put some of the examples and exercises in audio form, as do many theory texts today. I also think answer keys for some of the shorter exercises would make this book even more useful, though of course such things tempt some students to peek.

Still, the organization of the material and the obvious expertise of the author make this textbook a most impressive entry in the music theory teaching sweepstakes.

A culinary turning point in my life.

I think that those who rated this book on the low side really didn't understand what it was all about.

Having had ramen-ya's in Osaka, I can understand the fanaticism surrounding this noodle. There is so much more to ramen than the instant packages you can get 10 for whatever...

For all home chefs, you remember the day you had your "AHA!" moment. I did with this cook book. His friend's comment on why no one was about to impart to Ivan the secrets of making ramen is that they only knew what they were taught and never actually THOUGHT about what made that bowl special or even contemplated on making something based on personal desire and taste.

I've always wanted to make ramen from scratch. And this book REALLY had me THINKING about what I really was contemplating on doing. Making my OWN signature bowl with the things I really LOVE about ramen all in one spot.

My whole outlook on home cuisine has changed dramatically.

I've been a biochemist for most of my adult life, only switching my focus on completely new pathways in the last five years. It's time to break out my bench notebook and start working on a new and exciting project, one I'll be working on for the rest of my unusual life.

Life is uncertain, as Ivan pointed out. Having been through some bad earthquakes myself and helping my friends dig their homes out after the Kobe Earthquake, well, a bowl of ramen really was more than a bowl of ramen back then. It's life-affirming.

So I really did get it. A lot more than I had anticipated, so I feel this book was worth every single cent and then some.

PS: Planning to host a Ivan Ramen Night. Will be parceling out each component out to fellow foodie friends, and for one night only, we'll assemble the whole shebang, and ACTUALLY be able to spend time eating and laughing rather than frantically rushing about the kitchen trying to get everything out... I'll let you know how it goes!

Okay, we all decided to make our yearly New Year's Eve party something to really remember. Tonight was our Ivan Ramen Night!!! Man, I would want to do this at least monthly! It was really great with the least painful way to put together this great bowl of noodles. I took photos. Won't be able to put them here like I would like it, because I go crazy on layout and photos. Can't do it here at Amazon... let's get back to the subject at hand.

Took us less than an hour before we started serving yummy ramen. I also had made some black garlic oil if you wanted it in your bowl. I have had it this way, and I loved it!! The noodles were stunning -- and I made these all by myself! So now I can do this as often as I want. And I do like making homemade pasta. It soaks up the flavors wonderfully. I was amazed on how great the broth was. I definitely want to make my own magick fish dust. I could use this in many recipes I make. The problem is that this is an expensive ingredient. But it is cool to have a grating box exactly like Iron Chef Morimoto.

I highly recommend that if you want to do "the ramen", parcel out the job to fellow foodies. Now that I know what this all tastes like, I can replicate this all by myself easily. It won't assemble itself. I'll give myself at least a week.

My only change? I love the pork in this recipe. It would cause a HUGE imbalance, but I'd rather have 2-3 slices. And I LOVE hard-boiled eggs. At least 2 here.

We decided to do something very different. It's like Evening at the Improv as we each described how we made in the most humorous way possible. I'm glad I digitaped this. It was hysterical!

So it's almost 23:00. We're all fat and sassy with too much ramen. However, I know what happens to ramen after you've even a huge bowl of it. You'll want something decadent and deep-fried. So we're having deep-fried cilantro shrimp rolls. I've also thawed out some really great honey-smoked salmon from Peninsula Seafoods. I've turned it into smoked salmon rangoon with a fine dipping chili sauce -- 1 part chili sauce and 1 part plum jelly. Yummy!

I do highly recommend putting together this meal of ramen with friends who love ramen, too.

This is not your college dorm room ramen!

A great read if you are a foodie, or even if your not! The human story is compelling, the explanation of the Japanese Ramen experience both instructive and mouth watering. and you develop a respect for an individual who was and is willing to take risks to live his dream. I bought this as a beach read but found I could not put it down. If the story is not enough, Orkin gives you recipes you can try for yourself. Thanks Ivan , I hope I can visit one of your restaurants to taste the real thing.

Fuel Your Ramen Obsession

Author Ivan Orkin's story of his path to ramen stardom is an interesting tale, even if ramen isn't your thing. More so since it's so unusual to hear of a foreigner breaking the almost impenetrable food world barrier in Japan, and ultimately being accepted enough by the populace to become a part of the ramen fabric there. This is not a cookbook, in the usual sense. There's lots of food information, but not for those interested in the quick and easy path to home ramen enjoyment. Mastering cooking technique is a matter of putting in a lot of time and effort. Orkin certainly did that, but I'm not sure most will be inspired by his tale to take up their own pursuit of the perfect noodle bowl. The recipes are there, but the process is laborious enough, so most will probably opt for something simpler. I think this is a good read for the food/ramen obsessed. Those wishing only to dip their fingers in the ramen broth, as it were, might want to look elsewhere.

On the money about getting their money

Some months ago I bought a book called Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping--Updated and Revised for the Internet, the Global Consumer, and Beyond. It was definitely an eye-opener. Paco Underhill went into great detail about how and where we buy. It seems his team spent hours watching customers going around large department stores, looking at this and that, and maybe trying it on, before deciding to buy it.

Unfortunately, we buy less and less in stores and more online. You can't sit at someone's shoulder watching them go through websites and deciding which item is best. That's why Kit Yarrow has made a quantum leap forward in showing what sort of thoughts are going consumer's minds before they click on the fateful "Buy Now" button.

Yarrow interviewed a large number of people, mainly women. Some of the reasons they give for buying something are difficult for me to understand. Her first example is a woman who buys a pair of jeans in a size too small for her. She justifies this action by assessing what she would be able to sell them for, along with other items she has that are not her size.

Being a mere male, and one who is not noticed for his sartorial gait, I find this behavior hard to comprehend, similar to women who meet their friends to shop in the sales. But the most amazing thing I came across was the woman who bought Hermes scarves, decided that they were too expensive, and decided to drop them from her shopping list.

Yarrow points out that all of these consumers can be influenced by actions of the manufacturer. Hermes did this by making a video that the woman saw on their website, and decided that the costs of the manufacturing process were worth the high price. The woman went back to buying a new scarf every six months, and - this is where my jaw dropped - happily paid $275 each time.

My own expenditure on clothes is probably less than $275 a year. Clearly I don't have the income of this woman, nor the need to keep up appearances for work, but I still find that number hard to believe. In fact, I went to the site, and the cost is now over $400. But consumers like this are obviously where the money is.

Yarrow has done an excellent job in decoding the new consumer mind. The book opened my eyes not just to the amount people were waiting to pay, but to the new mindset that governs online selling. Previous books are outdated already, and if you have anything to do with sales you need to read this book.

One of the best marketing books I've read

Marketing psychologist Kit Yarrow explains how technology has rewired our brains, making us more individualistic, isolated, emotional, and distrustful. This is not a pessimistic book, however—it's a practical guide to addressing customers' desires and insecurities in a time of deep cultural shifts. Not only has she done her homework, she presents the results with lightness and clarity. One of the best marketing books I've read.
